I attended Capitol Hill Block Party on Saturday this past weekend. The line up this year was stellar! After selling a few Wishbeard and Washington is for Gay Lovers tanks outside the show at the Wild Rose, I managed to squish my way to the almost-front of the main stage for Grimes.
It was sunset, and sounded great. She played all the cuts from “Visions” and one new song that sounded pretty poppy which she said Blood Diamonds had produced. Something about talking to god. It was almost impossible to dance up there with all the sweaty bodies packed in like sardines so I mostly just jumped up and down the whole time for a better view every couple of seconds.
Getting outta there was almost as hard as it was getting in there, but I did it! There were plenty of other shows I wanted to watch: Twin Shadow, John Maus, Major Lazer…but I just couldn’t bring myself to deal with the ever-increasingly drunk dude-broish crowd. So I headed to PONY!
DJ Amateur Youth and Bmore Free were spinning hot jams for Meat. I wanted a smoke so I asked some dude to bum one, and as he handed it to me saying “You can have a drag” I took it and ran. On my way, I spotted a guy wrapped up all snug in a giant American Flag. I asked him, “Hey, America, can I take your picture?” He said yes, and seemed pretty excited about the whole thing. Once at Pony, I felt sweet relief. The music was perfect. I danced the night away, shared my tube of Nicki Viva Glam with a group of drunk girls, got beer poured all over my head by Doug Newman, and screamed at the top of my lungs to Hole.
